Have you missed your Rubicon Enews? It’s been a few months since the last issue because the Editor, Annie Burke, became a mom. We are glad to welcome her back.

1. Rubicon’s Jane Fischberg honored as a Woman of Distinction

We’re proud to say that Jane Fischberg, Rubicon’s Executive Director, was named one of 10 Women of Distinction by the East Bay Business Times. She is part of a select group of women who are “forward thinking, determined leaders who have changed the East Bay’s business community.” Since 1997 Jane has worked in various leadership roles at Rubicon and recently led the organization’s efforts to expand into Berkeley.

2. Celebrate Halloween with Rubicon Bakery and Williams-Sonoma

For the second year Williams-Sonoma is exclusively selling Rubicon Bakery’s Halloween treats on their website. New this year is the Halloween Marshmallows described as, “Dressed up for Halloween with pretty chocolate and orange-colored swirls, these luscious and airy confections will literally melt in your mouth.” And everyone’s favorite is back: Rubicon’s delicious Spider Web Cake.

5. Delegation from South Korea visits Rubicon

A delegation of leaders from the Republic of Korea (South Korea) led by the Vice Minister of Labor, Mr. Sung Joong Kim, spent half a day touring Rubicon’s various programs and sites. The delegation wanted to learn how to import the work Rubicon does to help solve some of the growing issues of inequity in South Korea. They toured Rubicon Bakery and met with Rubicon’s President Rick Aubry and other Rubicon leaders. So impressed were they that they are convening a conference to share their learnings with the nascent nonprofit community in South Korea.

4) Participant Profile: Laquisha Washington

ImageLaquisha, her husband and their 5 kids lived in New Orleans. They did, that is, until Hurricane Katrina made herself known and the levees broke. Their house was ruined. After spending time in various shelters, Laquisha’s husband decided to leave the family. Luckily, her father-in-law came to her rescue. He drove a bus from the Bay Area, picked up the family, and brought them to dry California. They had no home, she had no job, and it wasn’t clear what was going to happen next.

“Everything was going downhill until I found Rubicon,” said Laquisha.

Staff at Rubicon’s
Berkeley office has helped her find an apartment. And we are working with her to find child care and a job. One step at a time, Rubicon is helping Laquisha get back on her feet.

“Rubicon has helped me so much. I’m putting my life together, little by little,” she said.
