Inaugural Rubicon Honors a Hit
On Thursday, April 28th over 175 people celebrated the
contributions of nine Honorees who have gone above and
beyond for Rubicon, our clients, and the community. The
Mayor of Richmond, Irma Anderson, served as the MC and
delicious food was provided by One Market, Piperade, and
Bocadillos restaurants.
“Rubicon is the
anti-poverty agency of the Bay Area,” said Honoree Carol
Lamont of the San Francisco Foundation.
With
significant contributions from corporate sponsors,
restaurants, and wineries, the event raised over $50,000 to go
towards Rubicon’s programs and operations. The event sponsors
include:
Title Sponsor: Bank of America
Executive Sponsors: Chevron, PG&E, Kaiser
Permanente Sponsors: The Mechanics Bank, Wareham
Developers, Lennar BVHP, Benefactors: Chiron,
Goldman Sachs, and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer Feld LLP

Russian Bakers Visit Rubicon Bakery
Eleven entrepreneurs from Russia – all owners and managers
of small or mid-size bakeries – visited Rubicon’s Bakery on
Friday, April 29 to learn about how our unique bakery
operates. Organized by the Center of Citizen Initiatives and
hosted by the Lamorinda Rotary Clubs, the eleven bakers
learned that we don’t use preservatives, no artificial
flavors, and no trans fats. They also learned about our social
programs.

Rubicon Success Story: Introducing Robert Cruz
Robert was born in Denver,
grew up in San Francisco, and attended college. After school
he worked in sales in the garment industry, eventually working
his way up to manager of a wholesale garment manufacturer.
Then he started hearing voices. He was easily
confused. He began to forget basic information and became
extremely depressed. Because of his mental illness, he lost
everything including his job, his home, and, he thought, his
future.
He learned about Rubicon through a friend. We
helped him find a home and counseling. Robert joined our
Independent Living Program and starting painting in our art
program.
“Everything turned around,” he said. “Because
of [my art] I am on the road to health.”
